Blog- November 2013

I just finished midterms at Manhattan School of Music; it’s been two months since I arrived in New York City on August 28th.  I’ve already been to more amazing jazz shows than I can count.  The number of jazz venues in this city is nothing short of astounding.  And of course, I’m going to jam sessions with all of my friends.  The Jazz Master’s program is very small, so we all know each other very well and go to all of the same classes.

There’s so much to see and do in this city.  First of all, there are lots of attractions and many restaurants… I highly recommend Koreatown, Little Italy, and any hidden Brooklyn nightclub.  Second of all, there are five boroughs, each with its own characteristics (and Central Park is a whole other world in itself). And finally, the transportation system is very far-reaching, so one can go just about anywhere in the city. Sometimes I feel like I live on the subway…

I also just started teaching at the McCarton School (a school for children with autism) here in New York.  It’s so wonderful to be teaching music to all of these young people.

I actually have a Manhattan School of Music (MSM) ensemble recital on Tuesday, November 5.  It’s with my friends:  Brandon Wright on tenor sax, Hoo Kim on bass (who also played at the Jazz Standard this October), and Curtis Nowosad on drums.  We’ll each contribute original tunes to this recital.

But that’s not the only gig I have this fall…

I have four more concerts in my CD release tour (two newly added).  Here they are:

Hopefully I’ll see you soon. And I’ll keep posting more music for the holidays…

Matt
