September 24, 2006 ***************** September 10, 2006 Dear Family and Friends, --------------------------------- July 24, 2006 Happy Summer Everybody! We have a LOT of news to report in this edition of the newsletter and a lot of things for you to check out. So please excuse the length of this edition! * * * * * First of all, we have a brand NEW web site for you all to enjoy. It has a new look and feel, but still has all the fun and information of the old site. Everything is there that WAS there, but now there is actual organization to make areas easier to find. And it’s professionally and beautifully designed by Real Life Advertising in CA. We are very proud of it. Check it out!! http://www.savagerecords.com/ This site is “cutting edge.” It uses Macromedia Flash. Don’t panic, however. All newer systems automatically have Flash installed. If you have an older system, it’s a simple download to get it. One of the things you’ll be able to see and hear on the new site is clips from The Matt Savage Trio’s upcoming new CD, “Quantum Leap,” which will be released worldwide in retail stores and online on September 19th. It’s an awesome CD! Yes, you read things correctly. We have signed a deal with Palmetto Records, Inc. (MRI/RED) to distribute “Quantum Leap” worldwide in retail stores and online! The Trio’s previous CD, “Cutting Loose,” is being re-released with new packaging and will also be available in stores and online on September 19th. Head to your nearest music store and be one of the very first to own the new CD on September 19th! *************************************************************** In other news: Matt recently went to NY to receive his ASCAP 2005/2006 “Young Jazz Composer” Award and perform his winning composition “Serenity” for all the jazz legends attending the coveted Jazz Wall event. This year’s living legends inscribed on the wall were Clark Terry, Frank Foster and Horace Silver. You can read about the event (and several other new write-ups) in the scrapbook section of the new web site. http://www.savagerecords.com/past_performances.htm WELT DER WUNDER Magazine in Germany featured an article about Matt in one of its most recent issues. ********************************************************************** The CNN special entitled, “Genius,” featuring Matt, was shown at the Atlanta Film Festival this past June and will be broadcast on television this coming September 17th. Usually the show airs at 10 PM; however, CNN is trying for an earlier evening broadcast time. Stay tuned for details. But mark the date on your calendars, and check your local listings for actual time of airing close to that date. September 17th is a Sunday! *********************************************************************** Our trip to Washington, DC for the VSA “Start with the Arts” Festival in June was fantastic. You can read about some of our adventures in the SCRAPBOOK section of our web site. There were too many activities about which to write, so we couldn’t write about everything. In addition to what’s on the web site, we received a private tour of the White House and watched the President arrive in his helicopter, Marine One, which landed on the front lawn. The President walked off the helicopter and waved to us. We did some fantastic things with our wonderful friends at the VSA, performed concerts, visited with family and did sightseeing (at the Smithsonian Zoo, etc.), so please forgive that we didn’t write about everything. We just couldn’t! You can read about the Kennedy Center performance and the Farragut Square performance and Matt’s Capitol Hill appearance in our Scrapbook. We just added these new write-ups. **** For those of you who would like to watch a video of The Trio’s performance at The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, it’s on the Kennedy Center’s web site!! Just follow this link and scroll WAY down the page to June 6th, the date of the concert. http://www.kennedy-center.org/programs/millennium/archive_month.cfm?month=6&year=2006# And since we are talking video, on the recommendation of one of Matt’s fans, we put a video of the Trio performing on the YOUTUBE web site, a site that shows all sorts of videos. There are some weird things on the site if you want to look for them, but there are also absolutely UNBELIEVABLE jazz videos of many of the jazz legends, old and new…Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, the list goes on. I haven’t even scratched the surface of what is out there yet. I’ve been putting together a list of my favorite clips of all the jazz musicians/groups and Matt and I will have fun watching them together. Since Matt is a jazz musician, we decided to add HIM there too. Here is the link. The more people who go to the site and play the clip the higher the “view count.” The higher the view count, the more people who will watch the video out of curiosity. So, if you feel like it, click on this link and watch the video. Watching even PART of the video counts, so if you’ve seen it before, just watch the first 30 seconds or so and then stop. You don’t have to sign up. If you WANT to, you can also add comments and rate the video (but you have to become a member to do that). Here is the link to our first video upload. If this is popular, we’ll continue to upload to YOUTUBE when we upload to OUR web site. (And yes, we are going to upload a new video to our web site soon!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X57yM6S1bRQ The Trio has some terrific concerts upcoming in the next few months. Local New England Folks can come to hear the Trio at the Regattabar in Cambridge, MA on September 27, and NY fans can come to Dizzy’s at Jazz at Lincoln Center on December 4, 2006. More concerts are in the works nationally, so check back for October and November gigs. June 1, 2006 Dear Friends, Much has been going on at the Savage household of late. On April 29th, Matt performed in NYC at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to celebrate of the music of Duke Ellington on the anniversary of his birthday. There was a screening of award-winning documentary maker Gary Keys’ three films about jazz legend Edward Kennedy Ellington, including Keys’ most recent film, “Reminiscing in Tempo.” Matt did solo performances of never-before performed Ellington tunes from Ellington’s original handwritten scores in between the films, but then he also performed with the Ellington All Stars and with another band. He was the pianist for the day, performing Ellington tunes with every band. Of course, he didn’t KNOW he was to perform with other bands in addition to his “special” solo tunes, so it was a good thing he knew so many Ellington tunes off the top of his head!!!!!! Another cool event was held in Manchester, NH at The Palace Theatre. Matt performed a live improvisation to accompany Laurel and Hardy’s silent movie “From Soup to Nuts” (just like in the old days!) He found he had a natural ability to “see” the music in the film and LOVED doing the show. He hopes to score full length movies as his next project. And, the Trio just returned from a concert in sunny West Palm Beach, FL at the Kravis Center. Behind the scenes, Savage Records is working on a new web site, which we hope will be up in the next few weeks, and on a new CD, which will be released in September. On top of that, a documentary featuring Matt and other Savants entitled, “Beautiful Minds – Voyage into the Brain” has been airing in Europe and Japan, bringing us a lot of radio play, newspaper and magazine articles and CD orders from overseas. Looks like a tour will be in order for the future. Closer to home, CNN will be airing a special Medical Report about “Genius” which will feature Matt. We do not yet have an airing date on this, but are told it will air in September. We’ll keep you posted. One other quick thing to let you all know about is that The Matt Savage Trio will be performing several times in Washington, DC next week…Tuesday, June 6th from 6-7 PM at The Kennedy Center (Millenium Stage), Thursday, June 8th from 12-1 PM at Farragut Square, and Friday, June 9th from 6-7 PM at Union Station. ****ALL of these concerts are FREE as part of the VSA “Start with the Arts” Festival. Even the Kennedy Center concert is free admission. Get there really early to ensure a seat. The Millenium Stage is a very nice venue! **** Matt is also sneaking in a solo appearance on Capitol Hill, which, unfortunately, is not open to the public. Sorry. To round out our month of June, Matt and I are headed to Manhattan again, where Matt is to perform at ASCAP’s Jazz Wall Event and receive ASCAP’s Young Jazz Composer Award. Yes, things are busy but exciting. And to round out the good news, it looks like NH has finally finished with its rain and floods. We hope you all are faring well and are looking forward to summer as much as we.
